SystemGuardian for Oracle Service Upgrade

2000/04/17

Overview
This Service Upgrade introduces some significant improvements to SystemGuardian for Oracle. The major enhancements are 30 new tests, an all-new monthly report format, and the addition of a new standardized daily report. There will be no charge for this upgrade.

We will be introducing this new functionality to customers at the start of their next monitoring period. For example, if your monitoring month end is April 23rd, we will begin running the new tests on April 24th. From this point on you will receive the new daily report to notify you of problems. On May 24th you will receive your first monthly report in the new format.

New Tests
We have included 30 new tests spanning various areas of concern for any Oracle database. The majority of the new tests focus on the areas of security, user configuration, and sessions. Full details are available to customers upon request.

New Monthly Report Format
The PDF/hard-copy report has been replaced with a new HTML report that can be read in any web browser. This report will be delivered by e-mail to eliminate shipping time. The report now makes a distinction between events and problems. An event, such as a change in an initialization parameter, occurs at a specific point in time, whereas a problem, such a low hit ratio, can be tracked over a period of time.

Each report has a summary, a detailed problem list, an event list, and a section containing background information and recommendations on the problems that have been detected and events that have occurred.

Problems listed on the reports are divided into five sections:

» New Problems - detected during the month
» Changed Problems - have undergone a significant change in status during the month
» Transient Problems - detected and cleared during the month
» Cleared Problems - cleared during the month
» Unchanged Problems - detected prior to this month and no significant change in status

This new report format allows you to quickly find the information you need and to deal with the most critical issues immediately. Each individual problem or event listed includes a link to the appropriate background information and recommendations.

New Daily Report
In order to simplify the communication of problems and events to customers, we are introducing a new standard format for daily reports. The format of the daily report is identical to the monthly report, except the Unchanged Problems section is omitted. The daily report looks at a one-day period rather than a one-month period. Like the monthly report, this report is delivered by e-mail.

Customer Involvement
The introduction of these enhancements will not disrupt the service in any way, nor will it require any commitment of time on your part. The new tests all have meaningful default configurations that can be used. Customers will be consulted to see if they wish to override any of these defaults. If you have any questions or concerns about this upgrade, please contact your account manager or our support group.
