General What is SystemGuardian for Oracle?
SystemGuardian for Oracle is a subscription-based monitoring and analysis service for Oracle databases. It helps lower your administrative burden, improves database response time, and increases uptime. SystemGuardian for Oracle provides the consistent monitoring and analysis required to let database administrators effectively manage their databases while leaving time to handle more important issues.

What is SystemGuard?
SystemGuard is the division of Skyridge Systems Inc. that specializes in remote Oracle support. SystemGuard was founded in 1998 and its first service, SystemGuardian for Oracle, was launched October 1, 1999.

What is a subscription-based service?
Think of a magazine subscription. You sign up for a specified period, and you pay a fixed price.

How does SystemGuardian for Oracle differ from monitoring software?
Monitoring software generally has a large up-front cost and an annual maintenance fee of 15 - 25% of this cost. With SystemGuardian for Oracle you simply pay a monthly fee.

Monitoring software can be complex to understand and time-consuming to setup. With SystemGuardian for Oracle, the monitoring setup is done almost completely by our staff.

Large sites are usually forced to dedicate full-time staff to the operation of monitoring software. SystemGuardian for Oracle is a service, therefore there is no software for you to maintain.

My company has staff DBAs, why would we be interested in SystemGuardian for Oracle?
SystemGuardian for Oracle lets your database administrators spend more time on strategic tasks and less time handling problems. SystemGuardian for Oracle complements your DBAs; it does not replace them.

How do I subscribe?
Call us toll free at 1-87-SYSGUARD. The first step is to sign a service agreement. This can be accomplished in as little as one day. Once the service agreement is in place, the service setup process takes only a few days.

Service Setup & Delivery How long does setup take?
The entire setup process generally takes less than a week.

What is my role in the setup process?
Minimal. You need to perform some simple administrative tasks at your site to give us access to your databases. We provide scripts and instructions to simplify these tasks. Once these tasks have been completed, we consult you about how we can best customize the service for your site. All of the actual customization is performed by our staff.

How/when am I notified of database problems?
The mechanism for notification is worked out when your service agreement is signed. Generally we use e-mail. Each business day we notify you of any problems that we have detected. In addition, you are always free to call us with questions about the problems we have detected.

Does SystemGuardian for Oracle put a heavy load on my databases?
No. The first phase of processing, data collection, is the only one that accesses your site. During this phase, SystemGuardian for Oracle executes only simple queries.

Security What database privileges does SystemGuardian for Oracle require?
SystemGuardian for Oracle requires select privileges on a set of data dictionary views. It does not require DBA privileges, and has no ability to access application data.

What is the SystemGuardian Daemon and what OS permissions does it require?
The SystemGuardian Daemon (SGD) is a program that reads database alert logs. It must be installed on each system that hosts monitored Oracle databases. The only permission that SGD requires is the ability to read the alert logs.

How do you connect to my site?
We can connect to your site over the Internet or through your PPP dial-up server.
